Grumpy Toad I Black

Standing upright with heavy eyelids and a sour, downturned mouth, a black toad whisks matcha with a bamboo whisk in a mottled, cream-coloured bowl.

The body is a compact black mass with a soft woodcut-like texture on warm beige washi-style paper, and in the upper right sits a red stamp with the characters 問一. The motif is a black ink rendering of the grumpy toad created by the Japanese artist Matsumoto Hoji in the early 1800s.
